Alternate Access Plan Purpose of the Alternate Access Plan In compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and ADA as amended in 2008, the TBR shall apply THEC’s identified accessibility guidelines to Informational Materials and Technology products and services that it adopts, buys, creates, uses and maintains. When informational materials and technologies do not conform to those guidelines, an alternative access plan will be developed to address the accessibility. This form is used to describe the alternate access plan. Instructions 1. Alter the bolded areas in brackets ([ ]) to reflect the titles of the responsible persons for this plan. 2. No functionality exists to expand/explain all abbreviations; No functionality exists to provide an alternative for text above a secondary reading level. 2. (general public, visitors, students only, employees, etc.). Students with visual, hearing and/or physical impairments. A total number of persons affected may not be determined because this is a web-based product that will allow students to interact with the OpenStax eText each semester, therefore, this number will be ever changing. 3. Responsible person(s): List the name(s) and titles of the employee(s) who will be responsible for implementing equally effective alternate access for the specified accessibility issue as described in Number 1. They will help students with any difficult information that arises by offering student tutoring; sitting with student and explaining images that may be difficult to understand. 5. The disclaimer statement will also provide name and contact information for the accessibility staff member and/or Career Advisor. 7. How will AA be provided: (continue from item 4 in section 3) Available workaround to the current issues: The eText version does not have abbreviations listed at the end of the book for everything within the book. As one reads through each chapter, the abbreviations and meanings are listed within the text and explains them throughout the text. I will provide a free resource (naturalreader.com/online) as a free reader for students to use as well. Issue #2: no functionality exists to provide an alternative for text above a secondary reading level: I realize that the eText images do not contain alternative text so when I utilize the figures in my notes posted for the class, I input the alternative text into my notes I create for these images and figures. Also, the “Link to Learning” animations and extra resources are closed captioned if in video format within the text. 3
